imperative.
December 2022
This project was created in my Graphic Design I class as a package design final. It is in response to period taxes, which are sales taxes placed on menstrual products. The imaginary brand "imperative." attempts to find clever loopholes for selling menstrual products so that they cannot be taxed. In this project, I took three taxable menstrual products—liners, pads, and tampons—and created packaging for them as if they were non-taxable products—tea, band-aids, and viagra. Though this project is satirical, my goal was to raise awareness against period taxes and portray menstrual products as what they really are: imperative.
Currently, 22 states have a sales tax on menstrual products such as pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and liners. The tax on these products is around the same value as the tax placed on non-essential goods such as toys, electronics, and makeup.
